The two paths after graduation
The Traditional Path
F-1 → Graduation → OPT / STEM OPT → H-1B lottery → Employment-based green card queue (multi-year wait for many countries of birth, including China)
The EB-5 Path
F-1 → EB-5 investment and I-526E filing → Concurrent filing for work authorization and travel document → Potential self-sponsored green card, independent of employer or lottery outcome
EB-5 does not automatically or immediately convert F-1 status into a green card. Filing an EB-5 petition is a separate immigration process with its own eligibility, documentation, and timeline requirements. This comparison is educational. Why Chinese F-1 students look at EB-5
Chinese students on F-1 status face two separate sources of uncertainty after graduation: the H-1B lottery, which is not guaranteed, and employment-based green card categories, where wait times can be particularly long depending on your country of birth. EB-5 is structured differently. It does not depend on being selected in a lottery or on an employer's willingness to sponsor a petition.
